That is why we are here to serve you, to answer any questions you may have about single tooth implants and to help address any of your concerns in general about getting dental implants. Dental implant restoration is an increasingly common tooth replacement procedure.

What is a Single Tooth Dental Implant?

A single tooth dental implant is made up of three parts: the implant, abutment, and the crown. The implant, typically made out of titanium, is embedded into the jawbone. The abutment is then placed on top. The abutment serves as a connector between the implant and the dental crown. The crown, the final piece of the dental implant, is made out of porcelain or metal, and placed on top of the abutment. The crown serves as the artificial tooth and is the only part of the dental implant that is visible to others.

What Are the Benefits of a Single Tooth Implant?

Implants do not require any modification or shaving down of adjacent teeth, or tooth removal, as bridges and crowns typically do. Dental implants are permanent tooth restorations, and therefore do not require any replacing, special cleanings, treatments, or extra office visits once they have been installed. Single tooth implants help keep neighboring teeth stable, thus preventing bone loss and periodontal disease from forming as would occur if there were no teeth there to support it.

Am I Suitable for a Dental Implant?

You will be assessed thoroughly by our dental implant specialists for your suitability. There are some medical reasons why you may not be a good candidate, for example, if you have uncontrolled diabetes, or if you have previously had radiotherapy to the jaw.

Another reason that will preclude you from dental implant treatment is bone loss in the jaw. Unfortunately, this tends to happen to patients who have lost teeth due to periodontal disease, which is an advanced form of gum disease. A dental implant cannot be placed into an empty space if there is not enough viable bone to support it. However, all is not necessarily lost as a bone graft will provide the required amount of bone to enable you to have a dental implant.

Finally, smoking interferes with the healing process because it restricts blood flow to the gums. This could lead to the failure of your dental implants, and many dentists will not place dental implants in people who smoke because of this.

Am I Too Old or Too Young for Dental Implants?

Dental implants are suitable for adults of all ages, provided they are healthy. They are not recommended for children as the jawbone and tissues have not yet fully developed and so the procedure will only be carried out on adults.
