Nitrous Oxide Sedation

 Most routine dental appointments consist of a checkup exam and professional cleaning. When the need for a more extensive procedure arises, we may recommend sedation dentistry. At Queen Anne Family Dental, we usually recommend nitrous oxide, for both children and adults, to provide a more comfortable experience.
The Most Common Form of Sedation
Nitrous oxide commonly referred to as “laughing gas,” is by far the most popular form of sedation in dentistry. The gas is colorless, odorless, and takes effect almost instantly. Once the gas is administered, patients report feelings of pleasure and euphoria. This makes it an effective way to relax a patient, especially someone prone to anxiety or fear while in the dentist chair.
Nitrous oxide is also one of the safest forms of sedation. Because the gas takes and loses effect quickly, we can easily control your level of sedation. For this reason, it is also the only form of sedation that does not typically require you to arrange a ride to and from our office on the day of your procedure.
Possible Side Effects
While side effects of nitrous oxide are rare, they do occur. Only a small minority of patients experience side effects following their procedure. Some of these side effects include:

Fatigue or grogginess

Excessive sweating |
To reduce your risk of possible side effects, we will administer oxygen for about five minutes following your procedure. The oxygen removes any remaining gas from your lungs, which prevents headaches and helps you become more alert. We also recommend avoiding a heavy meal both before and after your procedure.
Nitrous Oxide and Children
Nitrous oxide is not only safe for kids; it is the preferred method of sedation. We may recommend nitrous oxide for your child if they are significantly anxious or fearful about an upcoming procedure. There are also certain steps you can take to help your child feel more comfortable at our office:

Bring a “comfort” item like a favorite toy or stuffed animal

Sing, whisper or talk to your child in a soothing manner to provide reassurance

Hold your child’s hand throughout their appointment to remind them of your presence |
Your child may be confused, groggy, dizzy, or nauseous following nitrous oxide. These are common reactions to sedation and should dissipate as the medication wears off. Each child is different, but we usually recommend taking it easy for the rest of the day.
